The coronavirus pandemic hit the World Poker Tour particularly hard. The same happened with every poker tour around the world and every land-based gambling venue. The WPT was one company that adapted quickly, though. It immediately took some tournaments online with longtime partner PartyPoker. The WPT World Online Championships series on PartyPoker was the largest one for the World Poker Tour online thus far.

As the pandemic drags on, it seems that it will take a bit longer than planned for live poker to return to its former glory. Meanwhile, online poker play has increased.

The World Poker Tour also just announced this month that Allied Esports Entertainment sold the WPT to Element Partners, a private investment agent. The identity of the new owners and the path forward for the World Poker Tour remains a mystery until the deal closes in the coming weeks.

Until then, however, the WPT seems to be moving forward with new partnerships. One of those is with Poker King, an online poker site aimed at the Asian market.

Inaugural WPT Spring Festival

Poker King is the sponsor and host of the WPT Spring Festival, a new online poker series created for a range of players. The series will feature 13 tournaments from February 11-22 with more than ¥12 million in guaranteed prize pools.

Players may wonder why the WPT chose a relatively new poker platform for its latest series. Of course, the World Poker Tour did its homework and found that Poker King was a trusted site. It is so trusted, in fact, that longtime high-stakes poker pros Phil Ivey and Tom Dwan represent the site and serve as ambassadors for it.

According to Poker King, the site counts 1.2 million people as registered users and runs more than 50,000 table games per day.

Schedule for Range of Players

There may be only 13 events on the WPT Spring Festival schedule, but each one offers a promising guarantee. The buy-ins range from ¥200 up to ¥10,000 for the High Roller. And the series will offer more than just Hold’em, as Pot Limit Omaha, Short Deck, and Progressive Knockouts are on the schedule.

The full schedule is as follows:

Expect More WPT Online Events

When the World Poker Tour went online, it liked what it found. Its executives determined they could maintain the integrity and strengths of WPT events without hosting them in live venues. Obviously, the WPT misses its in-person events and will return to Australia and other parts of the world when it is safe, but the online versions of tournaments give players a chance to stay connected.

WPT CEO Adam Pliska said, “As the WPT global footprint continues to expand, we are extremely happy that our players in the Asian region will be able to experience the thrill of a WPT event conveniently from their mobile devices.”

WPT VP of Global Tour Management Angelica Hael added, “The WPT looks forward to working alongside the Poker King team to operate this first-of-its-kind festival and live stream the Main Event final table in multiple regions and languages.”

Look for more information in the coming weeks regarding the livestream.

The World Poker Tour has been sold to Element Partners, LLC for a reported $78 million.

Element Partners acquired the WPT from Allied Esports Entertainment in a deal that was officially announced on Tuesday. As part of the deal Element Partners will pay Allied Esports $68,250,000 upfront, and the remaining $10 million will be paid over three years from a guaranteed five percent share of entry fees from WPT tournaments.

The deal was approved by Allied Esports’s board of directors, and it is expected to close in a few weeks once it receives approval from Allied Esports shareholders.

In a video released on Twitter, WPT CEO Adam Pliska said, “We think this deal will allow the World Poker Tour to do a number of things that it’s always wanted to do. For myself and my management team, we’re still here and it’s business as usual. We look forward to this exciting opportunity and the next chapter of the World Poker Tour. We look forward to continuing to bring the best in poker around the world.”

Only Allied Esports Entertainment’s poker assets were part of the announced deal with Element Partners. It is unknown if the current joint ventures between the WPT and Allied Esports will continue. For example, the WPT has been using the HyperX Esports Area to host and broadcast final tables for their live events.
